Modernizing Line 1

Transport and Infrastructure
The modernization of Lille's metro Line 1 demonstrates Mezzoteam's ability to support some of the most complex transport projects. Used throughout the operation, our Construction Project Management platform facilitated the coordination of the many stakeholders involved in this major transformation.
As the world's first automatic metro line, commissioned in 1983, Line 1 underwent an extensive modernization program to meet constantly increasing ridership. The project enabled the gradual deployment of new 52-meter trainsets, which entered service starting in February 2026, doubling train capacity while improving passenger comfort.
Beyond replacing rolling stock, the operation required a complete adaptation of the infrastructure: lengthening platforms, installing new platform screen doors, modernizing the automatic control system, upgrading technical equipment (power, networks, ventilation, fire safety, supervision), and expanding the maintenance center and storage areas.
Carried out without interrupting service, this project serves as an international benchmark for the modernization of an active automatic metro system.
